Hays County is in south-central Texas, about twenty-three miles southwest of Austin. According to the Texas State Historical Association, Hays County occupies 693.5 square miles and is positioned between the Edwards Plateau and the southern Black Prairie region. The U.S. Census Bureau states that Hay’s estimated population for 2012 was 168,990. Its population is 57.5% Caucasian, 36.3% Hispanic or Latino, 3.9% African-American, and 1.2% American Indian. The county had a per capita income of $26,662 and a median household income of $57,834 between 2008 and 2012.
Hays County is home to many water springs and attracts many visitors annually. Archeological excavations near these springs have shown the presence of Paleo-Indians at least 8,000 years ago. In the 1970s and 1980s the growing Austin metropolitan area was influencing the area and in 1973 Hays County officially became part of it.
The Criminal District Attorney of Hays County is Sherri Tibbe. She earned her Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston in 1994. The Office of the Criminal District Attorney in Hays County has the duty of establishing justice in all cases and is tasked with giving legal representation to the general public and victims. The office seeks to lower the amount of crimes being perpetrated with Hays County.
There are several divisions at work within the District Attorney's Office. The Hot Checks Division aids merchants and businesses with dealing with bounced and fraudulent checks given to them by some customers.
