Hamilton County was founded in 1790 and was named for Alexander Hamilton. The county seat and largest city in Hamilton County is Cincinnati, which is the 3rd largest city in Ohio. Joseph T. Deters serves as Hamilton County's Prosecuting Attorney. He graduated St. Xavier High School in 1975, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1979, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1982. Once he had graduated, Deters began working as an Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor and gained knowledge there that would aid him throughout his entire career.
In 1988, Deters was elected to Hamilton County's Clerk of Courts. During his time as Clerk, Deters learned how to manage an office with hundreds of employees and gained a good reputation amongst his peers and the community. By 1992, Deters was appointed and then subsequently elected to serve as Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney. Sometime later, in 1999, Deters was elected to serve as Ohio's 44th State Treasurer in which he was responsible for managing over $11 billion in assets for the State of Ohio and would hold this position until 2005.
After serving as State Treasurer, Deters decided to return to the position of Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney. He is currently Hamilton County's longest serving Prosecuting Attorney and has been recognized as one of the best and most accomplished prosecutors in the state. Some of his accomplishments includes reducing the time and cost of completing capital litigation, the creation of a DNA database for the entire state, repealing of a 15 year cap on max prison sentences, allowing for certain juvenile offenders to be imprisoned until the age of 21, and made the murder of a child under the age of 13 to possibly entail the death penalty.
