Facts about Duval County

Duval County is located in Northeast Florida. The county seat is Jacksonville. According to visit jacksonville.com, the city was the main area for commercial activity when Florida became a state in 1845. By the 1920’s growth had spread and after the Depression the county’s location once again spurred economic growth and development. Additionally, during World War II, Jacksonville was made home to three large military bases, making it one of the Navy’s largest complexes in the country at the time. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Duval County’s population as of 2010 was 864,263 people. Based on crime statistics gathered from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, there was a 2.4% increase in murder and a 2.7% increase in forcible sex offenses in 2012. In addition to these increases, instances of robbery dropped by 6.9% and aggravated assault by 4.4%.

Duval District Attorney

Angela B. Corey is the State Attorney of Florida's Fourth Judicial Circuit that serves the counties of Duval, Clay, and Nassau. She was elected in August 2008 and was sworn in at the beginning of 2009. Angela was re-elected as State Attorney unopposed in 2012. Angela's family emigrated from Syria and she was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. Angela studied marketing at Florida State University and earned a law degree at the University of Florida's Levin College of Law. In 1981, Angela was hired by former State Attorney Ed Austin and served an Assistant State Attorney until 2005. In that time, Angela participated in hundreds of cases, including many homicides.

In the early spring of 2012, Governor Rick Scott appointed Angela as the prosecutor in the famed George Zimmerman trial over the killing of Trayvon Martin. By April 2012, Angela had charged Zimmerman with second-degree murder yet eventually the jury for the trial would acquit. In 2014, Angela served as prosecutor in the Michael Dunn case for the killing of 17-year-old Jordan Davis. As a result of Angela's prosecution resulted in Dunn being found guilty on multiple counts of attempted second-degree murder. Angela is quoted as saying she will seek a new trial that would charge Davis with first-degree murder.
