Delaware District Attorney

John J. "Jack" Whelan is the 2014 District Attorney for Delaware County. He was elected to the position in November of 2011 and has since dedicated himself and his office to the pursuit of criminal justice. Whelan graduated from Temple University with his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, and also graduated from Temple University Law School. Whelan started his career as a Delaware County Assistant District Attorney where he served as a trial team leader from 1986 to 1991. Whelan was also a leading prosecutor of civil litigation, municipal representation, and decedent estates for 25 years at the firm of Whelan, Doyle & Pressman LLC.

In 2005, Whalen was elected to his first term as the Chairman of the Delaware County Council, and was reelected in 2009 for a second four-year term. During his office as Chairman, Whalen oversaw many crime prevention programs such as:

  • The Senior Exploitation Unit
  • Safe School Summit
  • The RSAN and Delco Alert Unit

Whalen has also helped to oversee the establishment of the Delaware County Veterans Justice Initiative, which addresses the post-conviction needs of veterans who end up in the criminal justice system. Whalen is also the recipient of several awards including the Delaware County Library System’s Outstanding Public Official Award, the Delaware County Victims’ Rights Week Award, Child Advocacy Angel Award from CASA Youth Advocates of Delaware County, Citizenship Award from the Ridley Township Board of Commissioners, was recognized by the Delaware County Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation, and the Citizens Crime Commission Award for Bravery, and received the George G. Weidner Award from the Delaware County Chiefs of Police Association.
