District Attorney: Craig Watkins
According to the Texas State Historical Association, Dallas County is located in north-central Texas. Dallas is the largest city and serves as the county seat. The U.S. Census Bureau states that the estimated population for 2012 was 2,453,843, with about 50% being residents of Dallas. Between 2008 and 2012, 18.8% of the population was living below the poverty level. The county is made up 38.9% Hispanic or Latino, 32.2% Caucasian, 22.9% African-American, and 5.5% Asian alone. Throughout its existence, Dallas County has had a large Hispanic population. However, until 1960, Mexican Americans were listed as being white in the census bureau making it difficult to determine the actual numbers.
A large number of lakes in the area allow for both recreation and a water supply including Bachman, Ray Hubbard, Mountain Creek, Texaco, and White Rock. According to the Dallas Police website, overall crime in 2012 went down 10.7% and marked the 9th consecutive year of overall crime and non-violent crime reduction. Additionally, there was a 39% reduction in murder over 8 years.
Craig Watkins serves as the District Attorney for Dallas County and has held the position since 2006. Watkins was educated by the Dallas Public School System, graduated from Prairie View A & M University, and earned his law degree from Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth. Watkins is the first African American to hold the office of District Attorney in Texas. Since being elected, Watkins and his team have achieved a 99.4% conviction rate. His office has utilized DNA technology to strengthen convictions. He has also worked diligently to protect children by keeping sex offenders and predators off the streets. His office has also worked to free thirty-three wrongfully convicted individuals.
During the past four years of his duties, Watkins' work ethic and integrity led him to gain national and international recognition along with several awards. He has received the Justice Policy Innovator award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. Additionally, in 2008 Watkins was named Public Official of the Year by the publication, Governing Magazine.
