Cuyahoga County District Attorney

Timothy McGinty serves as the Prosecutor of Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He is a native to Cuyahoga County and graduated from St. Edward High School. McGinty earned his undergraduate degree from Heidelberg College and his Juris Doctor from Cleveland State University's Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Later on, McGinty continued his education by earning a master's in judicial studies from The University of Nevada, Reno.

Upon receiving his Juris Doctor, McGinty began his career as a county probation officer. He eventually would be hired to serve as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Cuyahoga County. During his tenure at this position, McGinty would be tasked with handling several high-profile cases, including the prosecution of the "West Side Rapist" Ronnie Shelton in 1989. For his achievements as Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, McGinty was named Ohio Prosecutor of the Year in 1992.

McGinty would then move forward with his career and was elected to serve as a Judge for Cuyahoga County's Common Pleas Court. He would serve as Judge for nineteen years and became well known for maintaining a high level of efficiency. By 2011, McGinty had made the decision to step down as Judge in order to seek the office of Cuyahoga County Prosecutor, a position to which he was elected in November of 2012. Upon entering office, McGinty launched several new units such as the DNA Cold Case Initiative Task Force to use forensics to reopen sexual assault cases and the Public Corruptions Unit to combat corruption in public offices.
