Bexar County is located in south-central Texas. The largest city in the area is San Antonio. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Bexar has an estimated population of 1,785,704 and San Antonio itself consists of 1,382,951 residents. It is stated on city-data.com that 95% of Bexar’s population are urban while only 5% are rural.
Demographically, the county is made up of 63.2% Hispanic or Latino, 26.6% Caucasian, 6.9% African-American, and 2.4% Asian. According to San Antonio’s official website, in 2013 there were 6,971 cases of violent crime and 65,910 instances of property crimes. However, from 2012 to 2013 there was a decrease in property crime of about 21%.
Susan D. Reed serves as the 2014 Criminal District Attorney of Bexar County. Reed is the first female to be elected to the position throughout the history of Bexar County. She was elected to office in 1998 after having served for twelve years as Judge of the 144th District Court. Reed was raised locally in San Antonio, gained her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and was awarded her Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas School of Law. Susan Reed began her career as an Assistant District Attorney in Bexar County for a total of eight years. She then went on to serve as the chief prosecutor for Texas's 144th and 187th District Courts.
During her tenure as Judge, Reed created a department centered on gang activity in their Adult Probation department. In addition to this achievement, she had been involved in the implementation of legislation focused on keeping active gang members from enticing youths to join their criminal activities, as well as creating gang free zones in troubled areas. Another area in which Reed has contributed greatly is the protection of elderly people from fraud. She pushed for harsher punishment for six different offenses when the victim of the crime is an elderly person.

San Antonio is home to four military bases and is the headquarters of the largest military establishment in the entire country. These military bases provide employment to 74,500 people. Toyota also chose to start working in San Antonio by constructing a truck production plant that would create nearly 2,500 jobs for locals in Bexar County.
