Appearing on the California Megan’s Law website not only limits your privacy, but can also feel humiliating and can negatively affect people’s perception of you when moving to a new area, applying for housing, or finding a job. It is frustrating to know that anyone can just look you up on the California Megan’s Law Website and treat you and your loved ones badly.

Fortunately, there are two options under California law in which you may apply to be removed from the website.

Option 1 - Court Ordered Sex Offender Registration Termination

The preferred method of being from removed from the California Megan’s Law Website is to simply remove your duty to register as a sex offender all together. Beginning on July 1, 2021, you may petition the court to terminate your sex offender registration requirement, if certain requirements are met, which thereby removes you from appearing on the California Megan’s Law Website as well. This is a great option for Tier 1, Tier 2, and eligible Tier 3 offenders who have met their minimum required registration period. Please visit California Sex Registration Termination to learn more.

Option 2 - Megan’s Law Website Removal

We typically only recommend Megan's Law Removal if you are either unable to terminate your duty to register or have no yet met the requirements in order to do so. California's Megan's Law requirements and who appears has changed drastically in the past few years. Beginning in 2022, you may be removed from the California Megan’s Law Website by applying to the California Department of Justice. While this option does not include termination of your registration requirement, it offers the benefit of restoring your sense of privacy and finally being removed from the California Megan’s Law website. To be eligible your only registerable offense must meet the following criteria:

• You were the victim's parent, stepparent, sibling, or grandparent; AND
• Your offense did not involve penetration or oral copulation; AND
• You will need proof that a recently conducted SARATSO (State Authorized Risk Assessment Tools for Sex Offenders) static, dynamic, or other violence risk assessment instrument has indicated you are are average, below average, or very low for risk to re-offend.

If this option is available to you, it is crucial that you successfully complete your probation without incident. This is because, if you have violated probation and consequently went to county jail or prison, you will no longer be eligible for removal and your application will be terminated.
