How Do I Request an FBI Report?

Requesting your FBI criminal background report

Request a report from the FBI database.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI, has two methods in which you can request your FBI Report:

Request an FBI Report Directly through the FBI

The first method is to submit your request directly to the FBI. Processing your request through the FBI can take anywhere between six to eight weeks. The request can be achieved by completing the Application Form available on https://www.fbi.gov/foia/requesting-fbi-records, obtaining a set of your fingerprints on a fingerprint card at a local law enforcement agency, and submitting your payment of $18 in the form of money order, cashier's check, or credit card to:

Request an FBI Report Through FBI Approved Channelers

The second method to submit your request is through an FBI-approved Channeler. An FBI-approved Channeler is a private business location that is contracted with the FBI to receive fingerprint submissions, collect associated fees, and electronically submit the request to the FBI. Processing your request through an FBI-approved Channeler can take anywhere between 24 to 72 hours, depending on the location.

You can find a list of FBI-approved Channelers at https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/background-checks/list-of-fbi-approved-channelers. Click on the Channeler you wish to use, and you will be directed to fill out the appropriate Application Form, obtain a set of your fingerprints through a local law enforcement agency, and submit the required payment for the expedited fee to the address provided by that specific agency in the directions.

How to Update and Correct Your FBI Criminal History Report

If you have requested an FBI Criminal History Report and find an inconsistency, such as outdated or incorrect information, the FBI allows you to challenge your record.

Updating or correcting a record can include entering cases expunged, pardons entered, conviction levels changed, or rights restored. When placing a challenge request, it is beneficial to submit supporting documents to indicate the final outcome of the arrest(s).

In order to challenge your record, you may contact the agency that originally submitted the information or you may send your challenge to:

Once your paperwork is submitted to the Correspondence Group, the Correspondence Group will contact the agencies to verify and/or correct your entry. Upon receiving official receipt of communication from the agencies, the FBI will make the necessary or appropriate changes and notify you of the outcome.

The FBI Criminal History Report includes only the information submitted by local, state, federal, and certain international agencies. The state repository is responsible for maintaining and updating state criminal history records.
