Kathleen M. Rice is the 2014 District Attorney of Nassau County in New York State. She received her undergraduate degree from Catholic University and her law degree from Touro Law School. Rice was elected to the position in 2005 and since then has been re-elected twice. Prior to being elected district attorney, Rice served as an assistant district attorney in Brooklyn and was responsible for several cases of murder and rape. She subsequently served as a federal prosecutor of white-collar crimes under the authority of Attorney General Janet Reno.
Upon taking office, Rice decided to focus on drunk driving in Long Island. She participated in the authoring of legislation meant to increase penalties on individuals who drink and drive with children present or who injure or kill people as a result of drunken driving. She has also worked to reduce plea-bargaining for repeat offenders. For her efforts in the area of drunk driving, Rice has received praise from the advocacy organization Mother's Against Drunk Driving.
Rice has also combated the city of Hempstead's drug epidemic by putting for the Terrace-Bedell Initiative, which offers offender-rehabilitations programs, along with community outreach, to reduce drug activity in the area. Under this initiative there has been an 82% reduction in drug related crimes. The Terrace-Bedell Initiative was so successful that the U.S. Department of Justice adopted it for use in areas in the county of similar circumstance.
